Since DNA analysis wasn’t available in 1984, the force kept all the samples and evidence gathered at the scene for more than three decades.
In the 1990s, samples of semen collected from the crime scene were used to extract the killer’s DNA, which was then uploaded to the national DNA database. Since the offender had not yet been detained for any criminal offenses, there was no match from the database at that time.
In 2014, Hampton’s daughter, who was 41 at the time, was detained after an altercation with her partner. She was warned, her DNA was taken, and it was uploaded to the national database in accordance with police protocol for domestic violence.
When the familial DNA testing for Melanie’s murder was conducted again the following year, a match with Hampton’s daughter was discovered.
On June 1, 2015, Hampton voluntarily gave a mouth swab to Paul Mason, a retired police officer, while remaining composed and assured.
The semen stains on Melanie’s pants’ fly and crotch were found to match samples of this DNA. As the scientific investigation went on, it was discovered that Melanie’s pants and four additional areas of semen staining contained Hampton’s DNA. Blood stains discovered close to Melanie’s body contained it as well.
He got arrested after police matched his DNA from the collected samples DNA.
