The series of murders in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, known as the 'saree' murders, has reached a troubling count of nine women in the past five months, with suspicions pointing toward a possible psycho killer on the loose. The most recent victim, Urmila Devi, a 55-year-old resident of Jagdishpur village, was discovered strangled with her own saree while collecting fodder in a field on Sunday, November 26. The police, who noted the recurrence of victims being strangled with either a saree or a chunari, are intensifying surveillance and have formed special teams to investigate the cases. Authorities are working to determine whether the murders are interconnected or the work of different individuals, acknowledging the growing concerns and suspicions among residents. Meetings with locals are being conducted to raise awareness about the situation in various villages across the Bareilly district.
In the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh, a series of murders have left authorities speculating about a potential psychopath at large. The most recent incident occurred on November 26, where a 55-year-old woman, Urmila Devi, was found murdered in Jagdishpur village. This marks the ninth such crime in the Shishgarh and Shahi Adi areas within the past five months.
Police believe a common method, involving the use of a saree or chunari, was employed in strangling all the victims. Urmila Devi, the latest victim, had gone to a field to feed her animals but never returned. Her husband discovered broken bangles on the roadside, 400 meters from the town, on the same day. Subsequently, Urmila’s body, wrapped in a bedsheet with her own saree as the weapon, was found. Examination revealed damage to the back of her head.

Law enforcement, including ADG Prem Chand Meena and IG Rakesh Singh, investigated the case and identified links between Urmila Devi’s murder and the eight previous incidents. Two special teams are now dedicated to solving these cases, with increased surveillance in the area. One team focuses on direct case investigation, while the other gathers feedback from village chiefs and influential figures. Plainclothes police officers have been deployed, and meetings are being held with residents to enhance awareness.
While it remains unclear if the murders are connected or carried out by one or multiple individuals, the prevailing belief among locals is that a psychopath may be responsible. The police are actively engaging with communities in the Bareilly district to address concerns and disseminate information.
